Fall of 1987, I was assigned to complete my pastoral internship (vicarage) at Faith Lutheran Church in Eustis, Florida.

Lana, always the welcoming hostess, encouraged me to stop by the house to hang out, anytime I wanted to. So I did, riding my motorcycle by the house in the late afternoon and stopping in if it looked like people were around–they usually were.

One day, Bob came in after what was undoubtedly a long day in the truck, saw me in the kitchen and said, with a smile on his face; "Oh, hey! It must be supper time, the Vicar is here!"

It was my unforgettable encounter with him; a funny, direct and endearing man who loved his God, his family and anyone who walked in the door.

I pray that Lana and her lovely family find joy and peace in
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.

I met Bob little over a year ago, when I joined his bowling team. It didn't take me long to find out what a fine and lovely man he was, quiet and joyful, caring and respectful. That word "vacant" on the roster this morning touched us so deeply. We miss him already and will for a long, long time to come. There is an emptiness in his passing that will not easily be filled. We will remember him with love and the kind of gratitude that comes with having known a truly decent person. My heartfelt condolences to Lana and the rest of Bob's family. We met Bob and Lana through mutual friends, it was either playing cards or bowling, my memory fails me, all I know is that we became instant friends and began to spend time together, either having dinner at each other homes and playing cards or taking road trips to out in the woods places just to have lunch. Bob's sunny disposition always made our trips so much fun, so many fond memories of those day trips

A few years ago Bob joined our bowling team, we had so much fun together, him being an excellent bowler was our anchor man and he never failed to get us out of a jam when we needed him, that was cause for big celebration, we did the chicken dance so many times.

The best memory I have of our fun bowling days, was the Monday he wore his crazy socks, they were bright orange and really loud, that's the day he bowled the best ever, he had a terrific time and so did our team, "Bob's babes". Since then, we requested him to wear those crazy socks again, but they worked for that memorable day only.

Bob had a smile on his face and a positive attitude always, (that's why he beat us at cards most of the time). We admired his joy for life, his kindness, sense of humor, and his strong faith, compassion and love for his family. He truly left an indelible mark in our hearts. We are so grateful for the gift he was in our lives.

God speed Bob, we know you are smiling down on us from heaven.

So many memories it's hard to pick just one. But.......in the early days of our lifelong friendship (1970's), Jim and Bob worked together on a lot of household projects as did Lana and I but many of them turned out badly. They decided they could cut down a 40 foot tree and they did - tearing down the electrical lines and positioning it so that it would land right in their pool! We rekindled our friendship in Florida after we bought a condo in Bonita Springs - oh what fun we had there - walking on the beach, watching the sunsets from Doc's and sharing our little 500 sq.ft. condo. Then the work started after we purchased several condos together but we could always turn the tough stuff into fun stuff and that kept us going. Jim's been waiting for him and this is one thing that Lana and I were not too anxious to share. Our families have been tied together for so many years and we all share in your grief. Good Bye Old Friend!

We have soooooo many wonderful memories of Bob. Cards and game nights in which he probably won most of the time. He could play some cards!! Bowling tournaments around the US- he was always an excellent bowler but even when he didnt bowl well his sportsmanship and encouragement were always there. Our trip to France on the boat- he was my hero when he got us into a lock and not into the weir and who could forget "Scout", remember Bob would ride his bike ahead of us or into a town to check out any great places to eat or visit. He loved his family and Lana was always first in his life, as it should be.
Bob, you will be missed- Love you Buddy!!
