Melvin "Mel" J. Parquet's Obituary
Melvin "Mel" Parquet, 77, of Grand Island, passed away June 6, 2018. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana and left a legacy in Delaware before moving here in 2002. Recipient of numerous educational, athletic and professional awards throughout his years, Mel was most recognized for the lives he touched through activism and community empowerment. He also mentored youth as a basketball coach and official, as well as a softball umpire. He was a retired manager for the State of Delaware Dept of Labor, serving 35 years. Mel was a theologian and lifelong student of faith and spirituality. In his retirement years, he played and managed softball at Sun Lake Estates. He is survived by his wife, Cathy, his sons; Tyrus Parquet and Teron (Latasha) Parquet, both of Wilmington, Delaware, his siblings; Clyde Parquet of LaPlace, Louisiana and Leah Bazile of Dallas, Georgia; step-daughters, Dr. Charmain Jackman and Cherine Smith, both of Massachusetts; as well as seven grandchildren.
