I can remember first meeting John. Tom introduced me at a job site while he was working. Tom told him a little about me and he moved his glasses to the end of his nose and said, oh yeah? See to John it did not matter what you said about yourself. What mattered was do you do what you say? When you did what you said you were going to do, then you gained his respect.John expected you to do your best and always wanted to find better ways of doing things. He made jigs for different things to help to do a better quality job. He made an adjustable jig to fit in the stair tread to mark out the oak tread. He would cut shims that varied in thickness by a minute amount to shim drywall around windows.John was a good teacher and had the highest respect of the subcontractors. A couple of times there were calls to the office. The individual calling was very concerned because there was an individual in a Hofmeister truck parked in the shade and was not moving. We knew it was lunch time and he just had his lunch and was taking his nap. Yes, he taught us to nap.One day John asked me if I liked Goo Goo? I was a little confused. He explained that his grandchildren would ask for Goo Goo ice cream that he bought at Wal-Mart. Believe it or not a couple of days later he showed up at my house with Goo Goo ice cream for my children. When John knew he had Alzheimer’s he started to write down his life history. Each day I would get some of his story that he wrote the night before. I learned that he worked in his dad’s hardware store, hitched-hiked around the country, and served in the navy working in the engine room. He flew planes with a friend who flew them to Florida which eventually brought him to live in Florida. I hope you will get to read some of what he wrote.John liked to discuss many subjects such as politics and religion. He liked to listen to talk radio which brought up some interesting discussions. He also challenged me regarding what I believed. I have to admit he had some good points. Most importantly, I know he had a faith in his Savior and I look forward in seeing him again one day and having more discussions with him. Roger Stephan##imported-begin##Roger Stephan##imported-end##
