I worked a case once where a lady was selling her car and another lady asked her if she could test drive it before she bought it. The lady took the car and 3 days later still had not returned it. When asked to bring it back the lady refused. The seller just wanted her car back and would not press charges if she returned it. I approached the lady and told her that she needed to return the car or she could be charged with grand theft. The woman complained on me and I was called to Capt. Horners office. Capt. Horner chewed my butt out saying it was a civil matter and if I wanted to keep my stripes I better learn what a grand theft was. I tried to explain that no money ever changed hands, and that the woman just took the car and kept it. I left still feeling I was right. But you just didn't argue with Capt. Horner. Later that day he called me back into his office and said, "You know, I've been thinking about this and I think you may be right" Anyway the lady got her car back. On the way out I stopped at the door and said 'captain" Can I have my butt back now" He looked at me and flashed that famous smile. He was strict but would also have your back if you were right. Proud to have served under him.
