Dr. Jesse W. Castleberry's Obituary
Jesse Wendell Castleberry died Saturday, November 19th, in Eustis, Florida. He was 92. He was born Oct. 17, 1924, in Straughn, Alabama, to James Newton and Nellie Robbins Castleberry, the second of four sons. He grew up in Prattville, Alabama and graduated from Autauga County High School in 1942. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII and attained the rank of Flight Officer. He met Rosalie Nieft at the University of Missouri when he was stationed in Columbia, and they married in 1946. He attended the University of Alabama and Northwestern University Medical School, earning his M.D. degree in 1950. After his certification in 1957, he entered the private practice of general surgery in the Orlando and Winter Garden areas, where he remained for the whole of his professional career. His hobbies included hunting and fishing, political philosophy, the study of languages, genealogy, and history. He had a lifelong interest in horticulture, cultivating bromeliads, orchids, and fruit trees. He was the author of “Castleberry and Allied Families,” volumes I and II. Rosalie died in 2009. He is survived by his daughter Carol Castleberry (Todd Peterson), her daughters Sarah and Stephanie and stepdaughter Bryanna; his son Brett Castleberry (Ronda); his daughter Amy Shamrock (Steve) and their daughters Kayde and Savannah (Bryan Totten); and his son Jim Castleberry (Kari) and their sons Jesse, Samuel, and David. There will be a gathering in the Hamlin & Hilbish Chapel on Friday, November 25th from Noon until 2 PM. The final resting place will be Winter Garden Cemetery.
