Ms. Owen was my chorus teacher for most of my years at South Miami High, from January 1981 (when I joined the Men's Ensemble in mid-year) till she left Cobra Country in March 1983. You can (barely) see her at far right, center, with her back to the camera as she conducts the mixed choir at a school assembly, circa 1982.
I will never forget Ms Owen. I was the choir accompanist 77-79. She was amazing! Her approach to teaching was ahead of her time. I have never forgotten nor will I ever forget how wonderful she was. I became a classical pianist and then a piano teacher and took with me her teaching approach. RIP 🙏🩷
My favorite memory of Ms. Owen is the day she handed me a medallion during her unexpected farewell in March 1983. I didn’t think I deserved one — I wasn’t a music major, just a shy kid who loved to sing. But she called my name anyway. When I walked up, she leaned in and said, “How could I ever forget that shy 10th grader who sang ‘Ben’ in my office?” That moment stayed with me for the rest of my life. She saw something in me long before I ever saw it in myself.

I will always have a fond place for Ms. Owen. I knew her though Ms. Duncan, who was my choral teacher at South West (Class of 80). She often accompanied our choir for concerts and during competitions. I had spent many hours and years with these ladies and loved them both. I wish I had known about it sooner.
