I first met Charlie when he arrived at the CREC in the early 70’s to join our postharvest working group at Lake Alfred after receiving his degree at the University of Florida. Charlie was a very friendly, pleasant, and cooperative guy and we immediately found common research interests where he as a physiologist and I as a pathologist could join together and conduct research that resulted in numerous publications. Our families soon became acquainted and we found we had mutual friends of Dianne’s in our home state of Missouri. We had fun times getting together including our children to boat, ski, and fish.
Charlie and I often had lunch together at his house in Lake Alfred where he would show me his latest project, Charlie always had a project! We served together on the Christmas Party Committee when we used to have the party in the packinghouse sitting on field crates eating our meal and listening to Cynthia Evans and the other secretaries singing Christmas carols.
I sincerely was saddened when Charlie decided in 1985 after promotion to Professor to leave academia and join Cryovac in South Carolina, but I knew he would do well there.
Charlie was a friendly, honest, and compassionate person who will be greatly missed, we
love you Charlie, rest in peace.
