William E. Kilfoyle's Obituary
William (Bill) E. Kilfoyle, a great man devoted to his family and faith, passed away March 3, 2017 in Tavares, Florida, at age 89. The devoted husband and family man was revered by all who knew him.
He was born February 6, 1928 in Parma, Ohio. He moved to Elyria, Ohio in 1956 and lived there until his move to Tavares, FL in March of 2016.
Mr. Kilfoyle served in the US Navy Reserves after WWII, and then in the US Army from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War. He was a graduate of St. Ignatius High School and John Carroll University; and received a Juris Doctorate degree from Cleveland Marshall Law School.
Mr. Kilfoyle was a well-respected and longstanding contributing member of the Elyria community. He worked at Land Title, and later was CEO of Pioneer Federal Savings & Loan where he was known as the "Loan Ranger" for his dedication to helping families obtain financing for their homes. Then he served as vice president at Premier Bank & Trust (aka Lorain County Bank) until his retirement.
His civic activities included serving in leadership positions (officer or director) for the Downtown Elyria Rotary Club (Paul Harris Fellow), Elyria Kiwanis Club, Elyria Chamber of Commerce, Elyria United Way, Northeastern Ohio Savings & Loan League, US League Washington Political Liaison Committee, Elyria Memorial Hospital Foundation (aka University Health), Lorain County Home Builders Association, 1967 Sesquicentennial Committee, Elyria Urban Renewal, Elyria Financial Review Board, Lorain County Economic Opportunity Committee, and St. Mary's Church Finance Committee. He was also a volunteer for Habitat for Humanity and various other committees serving the citizens of Elyria, and was very active at St. Mary’s parish.
He was preceded in death by his much beloved wife, Marcella; his parents, J. Adelbert and Ann Kilfoyle; sisters Marilyn Wagner and Jean Kirby; and his fraternal twin brother, Robert Kilfoyle.
Survivors include his sisters, Katherine Schmitz and Carol Coughlin; and his children: Mike, Jim, and Joan (Hill) of Florida; Peggy (Mann) of Oberlin, OH; Pat (Amsden) of NH; and Katie (Remis) of NY; his daughter-in-law Lynn Kilfoyle; and sons-in-law Darrell Hill and Gary Mann. He has 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
He left a lasting and positive impression on all who met him and will be dearly missed.
Calling hours will be Tuesday, March 7, from 4 to 5 pm at Hamlin & Hilbish Funeral Directors in Eustis, Florida. At 4:45 there will be a tribute to Mr. Kilfoyle.
