Thomas E. Mutton's Obituary
Thomas Edwin Mutton 91, of Umatilla, passed away on October 8, 2013. He was born on June 24, 1922 in Steubenville, Ohio to Ernest Edwin Mutton and Bessie Pope Mutton. His family moved to New Philadelphia, Ohio, where he was a neighbor of his childhood sweetheart, Marjorie Knisely Mutton who lived on her family’s farm in Schoenbrunn, Ohio. They dated through high school and were married on August 16, 1942. Mr. Mutton worked in the Canton, Ohio Westinghouse munitions plant at the start of WWII, where he built gun batteries for U.S. Navy battleships. He enlisted in the United States Army in January 1943, and served in the North Africa, Sicily, and Italy campaigns. After fighting in the invasions of Sicily and Italy, his Company rebuilt the bridges destroyed by the Germans as they retreated through Italy. After returning from the war, Mr. Mutton joined his father-in-law on the Knisely farm, growing hybrid corn seed and raising dairy cows.
The Muttons moved to Eustis, Florida in 1959, where he managed the southern region for the Evanite/Olin Pipe Company. Mr. Mutton was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Eustis. With his wife, Marjorie, they were members of the Mount Dora Yacht Club, where he served as membership chairman and they enjoyed club activities with their many friends. He was a member of the Eustis Lodge 1578 BPOE, the Kiwanis Club and the VFW.
Mr. Mutton is survived by his son Dr. Thomas Paul Mutton of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a daughter Valorie Mutton (C. Everett) Boyd of Tallahassee, five grandsons, Rett (Dr. Ransey) Boyd, Blair (Elizabeth) Boyd all of Tallahassee, his namesake, Thomas Edwin (Jennifer) Boyd II of Charlotte, North Carolina, Paul Mutton of Winston-Salem and 2nd Lieutenant John Mutton of Winston-Salem, currently serving in the U.S. Marines in Okinawa. Mr. Mutton has four great grandchildren, Peyton Boyd, Everett Boyd, Aden Kate Boyd and Thomas Edwin Mutton III. He is also survived by his devoted companion and friend Jo Etta Palmer.
Funeral services will be held in the Hamlin & Hilbish Chapel on Sunday, October 13th at 3 PM. Interment will be in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Florida.
