Robert Irving Pomeroy's Obituary
Robert Irving Pomeroy, passed away on July 25th at his home at Lakeview Terrace in Altoona, Florida, following a brief illness. Mr. Pomeroy was born in Syracuse, New York in 1917, to Edgar S. and Adda B. Pomeroy. He graduated from Central Square High School in 1935 and Syracuse University in 1939. In 1937, while attending SU, he married his high school sweetheart, Jennie Lorabelle Baxter. He embarked upon his 34-year career as a high school teacher and administrator upon his graduation from SU at Central Square High School where he taught from 1939 to 1942. They moved to Barker, New York in 1942, where he taught for a year before accepting a teaching position with the Amherst School District in Western New York in 1943. He earned his M.Ed. degree at the University of Buffalo, and was active in professional organizations. Mr. Pomeroy was active in community church and scouting programs. He was an avid shooter, coaching a high school rifle team for several years and participating in competitive shooting with a local shooting club. He was also a licensed real estate salesperson, working for the best home-builder in Western New York for over a decade. In 1962 he was one of approximately 190 teachers from a field of 5000 who were awarded a John Hay Whitney Fellowship - a sabbatical year of travel and study at the University of California at Berkeley. He, his wife and youngest son (Peter) crossed the National Divide 13 times on their trip to Berkeley, crossing the Sierra Madre of Mexico on their return trip the following year. Mr. Pomeroy served as Administrator of the Blocher Homes, now affiliated with Beechwood Homes, following his retirement from public education. He and his wife permanently relocated to Florida in 1986, where he served as an officer and board member of Country Club Manor Mobile Home Park in Eustis, and was instrumental in negotiating the sale of the Park to the residents. In 1999 they moved to the Lakeview Terrace Retirement Community in Altoona, Florida. Again, he was active in the Residents' Association, serving as Treasurer, Vice President and President. Mr. Pomeroy was also a volunteer Auxiliary at Florida Hospital/Waterman for many years. He is a life member of the NYSRTA, the NEA, the NRA, and the Hospital Auxiliary. Mr. Pomeroy is survived by Jennie, his wife of 74 years; his three sons, Robert G. Pomeroy and his wife Charlotte Pomeroy of Arlington, Virginia, John S. Pomeroy (Suzi-deceased) of Arlington, Virginia, and Peter D. Pomeroy of Boulder, Colorado; six grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brothers Edgar G. and Stuart A. Pomeroy, and his daughter and oldest child, Elizabeth. Contributions in lieu of flowers and other memorials in Robert’s memory will be gratefully accepted for the "Tree of Life" Fund, Lakeview Terrace Residents' Association. A Celebration of Life will be held in the Lakeview Terrace Community Center on Saturday, August 27th at 1:45 PM with Pastor Al Bishop officiating. Music will be provided by Charlessa Johnson. The service will be followed by a video -"Celebrating the Life of Robert I. Pomeroy".Final Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery, Central Square, NY.
