Robert Scott Hobbs' Obituary
Robert “Bob” Scott Hobbs, 89, passed away on July 26, 2023, at his home in Mt. Dora, Florida.
Bob was born on Jan. 6, 1934, in Newark, New Jersey, to Wendell Wilson Hobbs and Ruth Josephine Cohen. He grew up in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he graduated from University High School. Bob enrolled at the University of Michigan, but a year later decided to enlist in the Army and served from 1954 to 1956. Bob returned to the U of M and earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business administration.
Upon graduation, Bob joined Price Waterhouse in Los Angeles, California, as a Certified Public Accountant and was selected for its Management Advisory Services program. Even though he was also being fast-tracked for a partnership, Bob found accounting boring and wanted a change. He decided to return to Ann Arbor and go into commercial real estate like his father, Wendell. Bob stayed in commercial real estate his entire career, eventually transitioning to consulting work.
Bob moved a lot while pursuing his career, including repeated moves to various cities. He lived in New Jersey; Southern California; Dallas, Texas; San Jose, California; Ann Arbor, Michigan; Phoenix, Arizona; and Mt. Dora, Florida.
Bob’s true passion was playing cards, specifically Bridge, and he was a Bronze Life Master. Bob joined local bridge clubs in the cities where he was residing and played regularly. He also enjoyed opera and classical music. Bob shared a birthday with his son, Andy. When Andy was born, Bob called his parents and said, “Guess what I got for my birthday?”
Bob is survived by his former wife Mary Alice Johnson Hobbs and their three children Matthew Wendell Hobbs, Andrew Ephraim Hobbs and Ashley Verna Johnson-Hobbs and wife Kathy. Bob is also survived by former wife Joanne Lauck, his brother William “Bill” Hobbs and his nieces Susan, Karen, Amy, Betsy and their families.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations on Bob’s behalf to the Lake County Animal Shelter in Tavares, Florida. The shelter was able to rehome his beloved cat, Sylvester.
Condolences, memories, and photos may be shared on the tribute wall.
