Rita D. Compton's Obituary
Rita Kreigsman Compton, 89, of Tavares passed away Saturday, August 9, 2014. She is preceded in death by her husband, Duane Compton. She leaves behind Rita McLaughlin, George (Ray) Kreigsman (wife Kai), Grace Johnson, Breck Johnson, and step-daughter Kathy Hamley; three grandchildren, two step- grandchildren, five great grandchildren, two step-great grandchildren and two half-sisters, Dorothy Folker and Catherine Linton.
Rita graduated with her Nursing degree from St. Vincent’s Hospital in 1945. Over the course of 30 years, she touched countless lives as an ER nurse and private duty nurse while also raising a family.
Rita was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Mount Dora, serving on the Women’s Guild, Parish Council, and creating the Grief and Bereavement Ministry in 1988. An avid golfer, Rita was a member of the Pine Meadows Country Club and served in various leadership roles for over 25 years, including President of the Ladies Golf Association and serving on the Board of Directors. She was invited to join the Florida Senior Women’s Golf Association in 1975, served on the board for 11 years, and was President in 1994.
Of great importance to Rita was her involvement with Cornerstone Hospice. She was in the second Volunteer Class (1984) and was the first person to receive a 30 year pin for her involvement with the organization. She organized the Hospice Grief and Bereavement program and received the Vi White Award for Volunteer of the Year in 1986.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 13, between 5:00 and 7:00 pm at the Hamlin & Hilbish Chapel. The funeral services will be in St. Patrick Catholic Church of Mount Dora, on Thursday, August 14 at 9:00 am. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Cornerstone Hospice 2445 Lane Park Road, Tavares, FL 32778.
