Mary P. Stokes' Obituary
Mary Phyllis Stokes, age 87, passed away peacefully at her home in Eustis, Florida, with her family at her side on Sunday, November 18, 2012. Born December 14, 1924, to Henry and Bessie Quayle of Madison, Ohio, which is forty miles west of Cleveland and five miles from Lake Erie. She was raised on an eighty acre farm with her two brothers, Perry and Paul, who both preceded her in death. Mary met her future husband, Lowell A. Stokes in 1946, while visiting her grandmother in Eustis, Florida. They dated during her two week visit and then she returned home. In 1947, Lowell went to Madison, Ohio, and asked for her hand in marriage. She accepted his proposal and they were engaged. Lowell returned to Eustis to purchase some property on Badger Ave. where he built his bride-to-be a new home. Lowell returned to Madison where he and Mary were wed on April 24, 1948. They spent their honeymoon at Niagara Falls and then returned to Eustis, Florida. Lowell continued working in the family orange groves that his father, Clifton Stokes, had purchased in the 1930’s. Lowell and Mary were married for almost sixty years until his death on January 22, 2008. Lowell and Mary joined the First United Methodist Church in the early 1950’s and were very active in the church for over forty-five years. Lowell and Mary are survived by their son Robert A. Stokes, his wife Paula, and one granddaughter, Eva Sumner and her husband, Ray.A funeral ceremony was held on Friday, November 30, 2012 at 2:30 pm in the funeral home chapel.
