Lester "Tyke" Bruce Gibbs' Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lester "Tyke" Bruce Gibbs, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, who peacefully departed this life. Lester, affectionately known as Tyke, left this world surrounded by his loving family on May 5, 2023.
Born to the late Winfield and Charlotte Gibbs, Tyke grew up with a thirst for knowledge and a passion for teaching and mentoring young minds. He pursued higher education at East Stroudsburg State Teachers College, where he not only earned his Bachelor’s degree but also met the love of his life, Susann. The two were joined in holy matrimony on August 3, 1957, embarking on a lifetime journey filled with love and laughter.
Tyke was a long time resident of Croydon PA, Bensalem PA, and Mt Dora FL.
Tyke proudly served his country as a medic during the Korean War, an experience that shaped the compassionate and dedicated individual he became. After his service, he channeled his profound understanding of the sciences into a career as a high school Chemistry and Physics teacher, where he inspired countless students over the years. Tyke also shared his passion for athletics by serving as a track coach, instilling discipline and sportsmanship in his athletes.
In addition to his educational pursuits, Tyke was involved in the world of horse racing, working at the Liberty Bell Racetrack and Philadelphia Park where he found joy and camaraderie in the horse racing community.
Tyke is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Susann Marie Gibbs, who stood by his side through joy and challenge. He leaves a lasting legacy through his children, Jeffrey Gibbs (Torgunn) and Leslie Smith. Tyke was the proud grandfather to Ryan (Stephanie), Elizabeth (Jordan), Kirsten (Ryan), Michael (Kensy), Harrison (Brynne), Catherine, Samson (Carla), Nicholas, Alex, Zachary, Kirstin and the loving great-grandfather to Daniel, Trace, Emma, Brynn, Jolene, Maximus, and Auden.
Tyke was preceded in death by his parents, Winfield and Charlotte Gibbs, his brother, Winfield Gibbs, and his daughter, Stacy Saturno, whom he now joins in eternal rest.
Tyke’s passion for learning, dedication to teaching, and love for family left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to know him. His memory will forever be cherished by those whose lives he touched.
