Bob Schrieffer was my dear friend, mentor, "wise man" in my professional life. We became good friend in 1975 when he visited China with the American Solid State Physics Delegation. That was the most difficult period for Chinese scientists. Bob greatly appreciated our joint research work with HAO Bailin on the calculation of critical exponents for continuous phase transitions during that period, in total isolation. He kindly included his evaluation in the published Report of the Delegation. That helped us a lot in establishing scientific contacts with the outside world. Bob later invited me to visit the Institute for Theoretical Physics at UC Santa Barbara and offered me to use his beautiful office in Physics Building overseeing the Pacific Ocean. He also introduced me to Stig Lundqvist from Sweden who suggested to appoint me as the Staff Scientist and Head
of the Condensed Matter Section at the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste, Italy, where I spent almost 17 years. I will attach two photos to support the above statements.
Bob's vision and intelligence in science, humbleness, humor and warmth in friendship will always be thriving in my mind. I miss him deeply!
