Glen Edwin Smith's Obituary
Glen Edwin Smith of Camden, Alabama passed away on Saturday February 24, 2024, at the age of 84. He was born to his parents Bessie and John Smith on October 12, 1939, in Nashville, Tennessee. Glen grew up in Mt. Pleasant, Tennessee and worked for the Nashville Banner as a paper boy at a young age and had many adventures that he loved to share! After high school he graduated in 1961 from Belmont College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He later attended New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary and earned a Master of Religious Education as well as a Master of Church Music. Glen was a Minister of Music in churches in Tennessee, Florida, and Alabama, as well as, serving as Minister of Education at Southside Baptist Church in Dothan, Alabama. He was full time pastor at Memphis Baptist Church in Dothan, Alabama. From 1975 to 1980 he owned two Western Auto Stores in Grove Hill and Coffeeville, Alabama. Then he returned to church work at Bassett's Creek Baptist Church in Grove Hill, Alabama, followed by Haines Creek Baptist Church in Leesburg, Florida, Fairview Baptist Church in Selma, Alabama, and lastly Friendship Baptist Church in Pineapple, Alabama. He served in full-time church ministry for over 50 years and had a genuine heart for the Lord. He and his wife, Ruby, served together for most of those years and would have celebrated their 45th anniversary on March 24th.
Glen retired in 2005, and together he and Ruby built their own home in Camden, Alabama. They always loved having building projects to work on, and he especially enjoyed spending time in the outdoors bird watching and observing weather patterns as a semi-amateur meteorologist. He also was an avid fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and the Atlanta Braves.
Glen is preceded in death by his brother Harold Smith, mother Bessie Smith, and father, John L. Smith, and his first wife, Dorothy Smith.
Glen is survived by his wife Ruby Smith; children Sondra Hulette (Randy) and Don Lauderdale (Sandy); nieces Marcia Cox (Terry) and Teresa Jackson (Brian); grandchildren Vinson Gwin (Jennifer), John Gwin (Meaghan), Tiffany Gwin (Chris), Drake Lauderdale, Tom Lauderdale; great grandchildren Austin Gwin, Anna Howard, Aidan Gwin, Jackson Gwin, Wyatt Gwin, and Madelyn Gwin.
Memorial Service: Saturday, March 2, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Umatilla (Florida) at 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service: Saturday, March 9, 2024, at Gullett’s Bluff Baptist Church in Camden, Alabama at 1:00 (viewing at noon) followed by a graveside service at Reaves Chapel Memorial Cemetery
