Gary Jay Conkel's Obituary
Gary Jay Conkel, born January 10, 1960 went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 21, 2019. Gary was loved by many and will be remembered by all for many reasons. One of the reasons was being a standout athlete... 5-time Letterman in both football and track at Pompano Beach High School... All -County and 2nd Team All-State Punter. In College Gary held the Citrus Bowl Record of a 51-yard Field Goal for many years while playing for Southern College and was a First Team Jr. College All-American. He also played at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Gary was given tryouts with numerous professional teams, including the Miami Dolphins. Gary will also be remembered as a man who loved to work in entrepreneurial and innovative ways. Co-workers, friends and neighbors alike loved Gary and appreciated his desire to always go the extra mile and were blessed to have him in their lives. Gary also impacted his family with memorial moments of laughter and cheer that family members will cherish for years and years to come. He is survived by his father Don Conkel, his sister Dawn Kaminski (Rob) and his brother Dean Conkel (Pearl) along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Above all else, through several of his writings, it is noted that Gary was looking to Jesus Christ as his source of help, strength, comfort and salvation. The family takes sweet solace in this. Memorial Services will be held in St. Henry's Catholic Church Parrish Hall, in Pompano Beach, Florida, on Saturday, March 23 at 11 AM. Rev. Dean Conkel will officiate. A post-service visitation with light refreshments being served will follow.
