Gene was one of my favorite cousins. I remember, as a kid, watching him take apart a whole truck engine and place all the millions of pieces in a sheet on the ground. Memorized, I watched him put the whole thing back together. Totally amazing!
My husband, Jim Bortz, is Gene’s cousin. Jim has memories of Gene always loving engines and machines. They’d enjoy going to the tractor museum and Don Garlits in Ocala. Most of our get togethers were during retirement, meeting at some campground mostly in Florida. We met up in Carrabelle, Arcadia, Tampa, Williston and many more.
Gene and Phyllis were the couple who always kept up with the extended family, knowing the most about all of them and visiting whenever and wherever they were.
Gene was a low keyed guy who loved his Lord, life, travel and machines!
About ten years ago, a bus owned by my church, Calvary Baptist in Lansdale, had overheated. It needed major work. I volunteered to fix it. Gene advised me about the cheapest way to do it. I got it back together. He happened to be in the area and came to the church to help me to get it to run again. I had never worked on a diesel engine before, so his help was invaluable.
