Dr. Elmer Thomas Carlson's Obituary
In Loving Memory of Dr. Elmer Thomas Carlson
June 16, 1944 – July 8, 2025
It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Dr. Carlson, who left us peacefully July 8 at the age of 81.
Dr. Carlson was a true pioneer in children's healthcare in our community as well as one of the very first pediatricians in Lake County. He was affectionately known as "Doc" by all that knew and cared for him. His dedication to helping others knew no bounds—he gave selflessly to his patients, his colleagues, and the place he proudly called home.
Dr. Carlson was a man of great compassion, generosity, and integrity. Above all, he deeply loved his wife, Gail Carlson, his children and his grandchildren. His family was the center of his world. Doc loved music and he would always play it with others to listen, relaying what the song meant to him.
For generations of families, he was more than just a doctor—he was a source of comfort, wisdom, and kindness. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched and the community he helped build.
He is preceded in death by his son Paul John Carlson II. and his brother, Paul John Carlson, Jr.
He is survived by his loving wife Gail Carlson; children Mark (Kristi) Carlson, Leigh (Jeremy) Boreske, Jane (Jeffrey) Harvey, Matthew Carlson, and Luke Carlson; grandchildren Tyler Boreske, Emma Boreske, Kailand Carlson, Xander Carlson, Rowan Carlson, Zachary Boreske, Tenley Carlson, Wyatt Carlson, Anya Carlson, and Gwenyth Boreske.
At the request of Dr. Carlson, a New Orleans style jazz funeral procession will occur on Saturday, July 26 at 2:00 PM beginning at Hamlin & Hilbish, funeral home and processing to St. Thomas Episcopal Church where there will be a semi-private funeral service, as the church that Dr. Tom and Gail Carlson have attended for 45 years is the oldest church in Eustis, and has very limited seating. Due to limited seating at the church, attendance at the funeral service will be reserved for church members, family, close friends, professional colleagues from the community, and employees of Lake Pediatrics and their families. For those unable to attend in person, the service will be live streamed on the St. Thomas Episcopal Church YouTube page.
The public is invited and encouraged to line the procession route and join in the procession as we pass. We will pass out kazoos to people who are attending so they can join in the musical celebration.
There will be a public celebration of life for Dr. Carlson on Sunday, July 27 at Ferran Park from 1 o’clock till 5 o’clock. We will have food, children’s games, and music. Please come and bring your memories of Dr. Carlson to share with his family and friends.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations to be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church Pipe Organ Fund.
