Charles "Chuck" Siebert Jr.'s Obituary
EVANS, GA - Charles “Chuck” Siebert Jr. passed away on June 17, 2021 at the age of 91. Chuck was born on October 3, 1929 to Hermina and Charles Siebert Sr., in Michigan City Indiana, in a neighborhood called “Canada”. He graduated from Elston High School and in 1949 started at the Northern Indiana Public Service Company as a yardman at the Michigan City Generating Station. Chuck married the love of his life, Phyllis McDermott, a week later on February 12, 1949. They were married for 65 years. While at NIPSCO, he was activated as a Naval Reservist and served in active service in the Pacific on the Destroyer USS Shields 596 during the Korean War.
Chuck was a lifetime fan of the Chicago Cubs, beginning as a boy as a batboy for the MC Cubs minor league team, getting to meet many Cubs players over the years.
Chuck was actively involved in community service in Michigan City, serving as Chairman or President of many civic organizations, including the MC Boys Football Club, the Marquette High School Blazer Varsity Club, SKWIAT Post #451, Moose post #980, The League of Latin American Citizens post #5006, the LaPorte County Cancer Crusade, and the Queen of All Saints Holy Name Society.
Over a career of 38 years at NIPSCO, he worked his way up to Plant Manager of the Bailly Generating Plant. He retired from NIPSCO in 1987. He enjoyed 34 years of retirement, first retiring to Mt Dora, Florida in 1987. In retirement, he was active in the St. Patrick Catholic Church, Governor of Moose Lodge #874, Member of VFW post #8087, Eagles Post #4335, AMVets Post #1992, and Disabled America Veterans Post #87. He spent his last 5 years with his daughters and their families in Augusta Georgia. His 90th Birthday party, “Chucktoberfest” was an epic celebration of his life with over 100 attendees. Chuck never met a stranger, and never tired of telling stories of his vast experiences in life. It was said that on his third visit to the Blarney Stone in Ireland, the stone kissed him! He will be missed.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis Anne Siebert, a sister, Donna (John) Dreske, and his son, Stephen A. Siebert. He is survived by his sister, Sharon (Loren, deceased) Odle of Michigan City Indiana as well as three children, Cheryl Lynn (Mark, deceased) Wahman of Evans Georgia, Donald Joseph (Donna) Siebert of Michigan City, Indiana, Susan Marie (John) Dewes of Vienna, Austria, and daughter-in-law Jane Siebert of Michigan City. He has twelve grandchildren, Christopher (Sheila) Wahman, Erik (Lisa) Wahman, Amy (Jamie) Bird, Sarah Siebert, Emily (Matt) Mellen, Lindsay (Michael) Bruemmer, Tracy (Peter) Panou, Michael Siebert, Kelly (Sean) Mooney, Ryan Dewes, Hannah Dewes, and John “Jack” Dewes. He also has 25 great-grandchildren, Alexander (Chrissy) Wahman, Joseph Wahman, Michael (Taylor) Wahman, Trey Hobbs, Sarah Wahman, Denise Salazar, Jacob Wahman, Adele Wahman, Madison Bird, Liam Bird, Lillian Bird, William Bird, Addison Woodham, Raymond Woodham, Jon Woodham, Josephine Woodham, Sadie Mellen, Lyla Mellen, Vincent Bruemmer, Ryan Bruemmer, Lauren Bruemmer, George Panou, Adrianna Panou, Anastasia Panou, Harper Mooney, and John Henry Mooney.
Visitation will be held Monday, June 28 at Posey Funeral Directors, at 1307 Georgia Avenue, North Augusta South Carolina from 5 until 7 pm with a Vigil Service at 5 o’clock. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on June 30 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Mount Dora, FL. Interment will follow next to his wife Phyllis in Pine Forest Cemetery in Mt. Dora, Florida.
