Bruce David Broer's Obituary
Bruce Broer, 80, of Eustis, Florida died Tuesday, June 25. He was born in Babylon, Long Island to Velma Mount and Howard Broer. He received a national merit scholarship at Stetson University in Deland, Florida. While at college, between his Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and his love of basketball, he met the love of his life, Joyce Wall, married for 57 years. He received a masters at Rollins College and spent his career as a guidance counselor at Howard Middle School in Orlando, affectionately called Mr. Bruce. He was known for his unselfish nurturing and guidance to the students, parents and staff. After 31 years, his retirement plaque read “your gentle manner and caring heart touched many lives”. And he mirrored this same gentleness at home. He had a love of turtles and nature from growing up by the water and shared that with both his children and grandchildren. He played basketball his entire life and competed on the Village Gold team in the 2015 Senior Olympics.
Survivors include his daughters Jocelyn Broer (Bryce Devine) of Madison, AL, April (Aaron) Morse of Howey-In-The-Hills, FL and Laurel Broer (John Roop) of Eustis; sister Sue Ploeger of Cincinnati, OH; 6 dearly beloved grandchildren who lovingly called him “Pop”. Also surviving is sister-in-law Carol Bonner of Stuart, FL. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Howard Middle School Athletic Fund, Orlando, FL and the Golden Triangle YMCA in Tavares, FL.
